FAQ

Which countries can I visit with a US green card?

The official rules we hold ease entry in 32 destinations for some holders of a US green card: without a visa in Albania, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Georgia and more; with a visa on arrival, an eVisa or a travel authorisation in Antigua and Barbuda, Japan, Morocco, Cabo Verde, Egypt and Saudi Arabia; in transit only in the Schengen area and South Korea. Your passport still decides: each rule says who it covers, in the table above.

Can green card holders travel to Mexico without a visa?

Tourism, business or other unpaid visits; the officer may ask for a hotel booking and return ticket. People who need a Mexican visa can instead show proof of permanent residence in Canada, the US, Japan, the UK, a Schengen country or Chile, Colombia or Peru, or a valid visa of Canada, the US, Japan, the UK or a Schengen country. The alternative applies to nationals of the countries on INM's list of nationalities that need a visa for Mexico.

Do green card holders need a visa for Japan?

Tourism only; online application; an interview may be requested. Since 15 May 2026 the JAPAN eVISA can be applied for online by all foreign nationals residing in Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the UK or the US who are not visa-exempt. The eVISA is a single-entry short-term tourist visa for up to 90 days; travellers show the visa issuance notice online at the airport.

Can I travel to Europe with a green card?

Exempts only from the airport transit visa (changing planes without passing border control). Entering any Schengen country still needs a Schengen visa if the nationality requires one. Holders of the US or Canadian residence permits listed in Annex V are exempt from the Schengen airport transit visa. Annex V lists for the US: a valid unexpired immigrant visa endorsed as temporary evidence of residence, the Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, the I-327 Re-entry Permit and the I-571 Refugee Travel Document endorsed "Permanent Resident Alien".

Do green card holders need a visa for Dubai?

India: visa on arrival or ICP 14/60-day visa. The six other nationalities' rule names a US visa or residence permit (a green card is a US residence permit). Indian ordinary-passport holders qualify for the UAE 14-day visa if they hold a valid visa, residence permit or US green card issued by the US, the EU or the UK, or a valid residence permit of Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand. Nationals of Kenya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and South Africa qualify with a valid US, EU or UK visa or residence permit, or a residence permit of Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand.

Do green card holders need a visa for Türkiye?

e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr "provided that they meet certain conditions" (not listed on the MFA page). Indian ordinary passport holders with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit can get a one-month single-entry e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr if they meet certain conditions. Pakistani ordinary passport holders with such a visa or residence permit can get a one-month single-entry e-Visa.

Do green card holders need a visa or eTA for Canada?

No eTA and no visa. By air: passport of the country of nationality plus green card. By land or water directly from the US or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon: green card (IRCC entry page and CBSA; another IRCC page still says passport and green card for all methods). US lawful permanent residents (green card holders) need neither a visitor visa nor an eTA to travel to Canada, whatever their nationality. See Canada for US green card holders for the documents to carry.
