Schengen visa fee: what you pay, and where
In brief
A Schengen short-stay visa costs EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11; children under 6 pay nothing. Consulates may charge it in euros or in local currency, so what you pay in rupees, pounds, dirhams or dollars follows their exchange rate. A visa centre (VFS Global, BLS, TLScontact) may add a service fee of up to EUR 45 in most places. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.1

Applicants shall pay a visa fee of EUR 90. 2. Children from the age of six years and below the age of 12 years shall pay a visa fee of EUR 45.

The current amounts were set by Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1415, published on 22 May 2024, which raised the fees by 12.5% after the Commission's three-yearly review.3 The Commission reviews them every three years against EU inflation and civil-service salaries.1
Who pays nothing
- Always free: children under 6; school pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers on study or educational trips; researchers travelling for research or to a scientific seminar or conference; representatives of non-profit organisations aged 25 or under attending events organised by non-profit organisations.1
- Free if the country decides so: children aged 6 to 17, and holders of diplomatic or service passports.1
- Family members of EU or EEA citizens covered by the Free Movement Directive can, under certain conditions, get a free and accelerated visa procedure.2
The visa centre's fee is not a government fee
Many consulates take applications through an external provider (VFS Global, BLS International, TLScontact and others). The provider only collects your application and biometrics; the consulate examines it and decides. Its service fee comes on top of the visa fee and is capped by law:1
- at most EUR 45, half the adult visa fee, whatever reduction or exemption you get on the visa fee itself;
- in principle up to EUR 80 in a country where the Schengen state you apply to has no consulate of its own and no other Schengen state represents it;
- up to EUR 120 in exceptional cases.
A country may keep direct applications at its consulate open to everyone. The visa fee is charged in euros or local currency, is not refunded except in the cases in Articles 18(2) and 19(3), and you get a receipt.1
In India
Rupee amounts follow each consulate's exchange rate and can change without notice; the euro amount is the legal fee.

Processing in India, as Germany's missions put it: processing takes on average 15 days after the application reaches the consulate; transport from the VFS centre can add up to 6 working days.4
In the UK
Consulates that quote the fee in pounds ask between GBP 76.00 and GBP 80.00; others quote EUR 90. The centre fee is between GBP 10.35 and GBP 32.85, or EUR 18.00 to EUR 40 where it is set in euros.

FAQ
How much is the Schengen visa fee in India?
EUR 90 for adults, charged in rupees at each mission's rate: INR 9,900 (Germany and Finland), ₹9,599 (Spain) and INR 9,540 (Greece). Children pay INR 5,000 (Germany), ₹4,799 (Spain) and INR 4,900 (Finland). Visa centres add their own fee, for example ₹1,802 at BLS for Spain.
How much does a Schengen visa cost from the UK?
EUR 90. Where the consulate quotes pounds, that is between GBP 76.00 (Switzerland) and GBP 80.00 (Hungary) on the pages we read. The visa centre adds between GBP 10.35 and GBP 32.85, or EUR 18.00 to EUR 40.
Can I get a 5-year Schengen visa from India?
The fee is the same EUR 90 whatever the validity. Under the EU 'cascade' for India (18 April 2024), Indian nationals residing in India can get a two-year multiple-entry visa after two lawfully used visas in the previous three years, normally followed by a five-year visa if the passport allows.
Is the Schengen visa fee refunded if my visa is refused?
No. The fee is not refundable, except in the two cases the Visa Code names (Articles 18(2) and 19(3)).
Do children pay the Schengen visa fee?
Children under 6 pay nothing and children aged 6 to 11 pay EUR 45. A country may also waive the fee for children aged 6 to 17.
