How we rank passports

What we count
For each passport, the 198 other countries and territories in our rules: 193 UN members, Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.
Where the rules come from
Each destination's own government: its foreign or interior ministry, immigration service or official eVisa portal, and EU Regulation 2018/1806 for the Schengen states. 461 official pages, each quoted, with the date we checked it.
The score
Destinations you can enter without applying at an embassy or consulate: visa-free, with a visa on arrival, or with an eVisa or ETA you get online. Each type has its own column; a visa on arrival is never counted as visa-free.
Visa required
Also covers routes that work only with another visa or residence permit (for example, visa-free only with a valid US visa) and suspended entry. Without that document, you need a visa.
Not verified
No official source confirms the rule yet. 6 destinations have no official page we could read (Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Palestine, Sudan, Syria and Vatican City); a few others are verified for some nationalities only. Unverified destinations never count, so a passport with more of them can rank lower than it would with complete data.
Ties
Passports with the same score share a place, and the next place is skipped (1, 1, 3). Within a tie, more visa-free destinations come first, then A–Z.

How this differs from other passport indexes

Other indexes may count visas on arrival and online travel authorisations as visa-free, include territories that are not countries, or keep rules that have since changed. We publish each type of access separately, from the destination's own rule, and we show what we have not verified.

The way you count changes the order. By visa-free entry alone, Singapore's passport leads with 125 destinations. Counting visa-free entry, visas on arrival and ETAs together, Singapore still leads, with 158. Our score also counts eVisas, which puts eight European passports level at 180.

How often is the ranking updated?

Whenever a destination's official rule changes: we recount every passport and log the change. The rules behind this edition were checked between 31 Oct 2026 and 6 Nov 2026.

Sources

Every count comes from the entry rules on each destination's page, quoted from 461 official pages and dated. The same rules make up the passport pages, such as India or the United States.

About this page

By the Visa Almanac editorial team. The ranking is counted from the entry rules we publish for every destination, each quoted from the destination's own government and dated; nothing on this page is typed in by hand. Where a rule is not verified, the passport's row says so and the destination is left out of its score. Editorial policy · Change log
