Countries you can visit with a Schengen visa

In brief

A valid Schengen visa changes the entry rule in 28 destinations outside the Schengen area, for travellers who would otherwise need a visa there: 22 let you in visa-free, 4 give a visa on arrival and 2 let you apply online instead of at a consulate. Most rules cover only some nationalities, and many ask for a multiple-entry visa, or one you have already used.

Every destination, with its conditions

“Who it applies to” matters: a rule for nationalities that need a visa helps only if your passport needs one there. A Schengen visa never replaces your passport, and the officer at the border decides. Where a rule covers several documents, the conditions list them all, as the official wording does.

With an Indian passport

With a valid Schengen visa, Indian passport holders get easier entry to 24 destinations. Each rule below applies to Indians, by name or because India needs a visa there.

With a Schengen residence permit, not a visa

These rules name a residence permit of a Schengen state, not a visa: a Schengen visa alone does not count. Many rules in the table above accept a residence permit too, as their conditions say.

  • The UK: a Schengen visa does not let you enter, and a short-stay Schengen visa does not spare you the UK's Direct Airside Transit Visa: the exemption names visas of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US.33 A long-stay (Category D) visa or a residence permit of an EEA state or Switzerland does.33 See UK transit visa.
  • The United States: our US entry rules give Schengen visa holders no route; see US visitor visa (B1/B2).
  • Costa Rica: our entry rules record a route for Schengen visa holders, but the official wording we hold does not name the Schengen visa, so we leave it out until we can quote it.37
  • The UAE and Uruguay: the UAE's rule names a visa or residence permit issued by the US, the EU or the UK38; Uruguay's, for Chinese passports, a visa of the US, Canada, the UK or the EU34. Neither says “Schengen”, so they are not on this list.
  • Transit: Singapore's 96-hour visa-free transit for Indians names a visa issued by, or valid for entry into, countries that include Germany and Switzerland35; South Korea's visa-free transit names visas of “32 European countries”36. Neither says “Schengen visa”.
  • Qatar: Qatar Tourism's visa check asks whether you hold a Schengen visa, but the answer for each passport shows only in its interactive check, which we could not read. We add Qatar once that is confirmed.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bahrain, Honduras and Haiti: we could not confirm a rule from an official page (blocked, timed out or not found). We add them once an official source confirms one.

FAQ
